On 18 September 2026, I decided to postpone the departure of Snow Goose until next year. I could no longer regard completion of the refit before 30 September – our absolute deadline for departure – as a realistic and reliable assumption. Leaving in October would push the first part of our voyage too far into the autumn for the weather and safety margins I want to maintain for Snow Goose and her crew. Safety first.

I realise how disappointing this is for the crew members who have reserved time, booked flights or otherwise organised their lives around our voyage, based on the plans and expectations we had at the time. I am very disappointed myself. But the voyage itself has not been cancelled. Snow Goose will be completed, tested and properly prepared for departure next year. I will now reconsider the voyage as a whole and develop a new plan: route, timetable and crew.

I am very grateful for all the enthusiasm and support for Snow Goose over the past months. I am very sorry that, after all our preparations, I have had to make this decision. I will update the blog as soon as we have a new plan.

About me

My name is Evert Jan Lammers and in September 2026 I will set sail on a long-planned world voyage aboard my yacht Snow Goose. This website is my digital logbook – a place where friends, family, and fellow sailors can follow the journey, and where potential crew members can learn more about joining part of the voyage. Below you will find basic information about me, the crew, the boat and the journey. The other sections of this site offer more detailed information.

I started sailing at the age of fifteen and got my first sailing boat soon after. Sailing has been a constant presence in my life ever since. For many years I sailed traditional Dutch boats, with the typical brown sails, both as a student and later with my family. On these traditional sailing boats, I cruised the waters of the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. With modern sailing yachts, I expanded my range to England, France, Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean. The time has come to combine everything into this journey: a circumnavigation. After spending more than 25 years living and working abroad in Paris and Brussels, I returned to the Netherlands a few years ago. I retired in 2026, so now I have the time. My partner will not join me on ocean crossings, but she will fly to selected destinations so we can enjoy sailing in, for example, the Caribbean. My children will join me in Suriname and maybe New Zealand. My sailing friends will join me on several legs of the journey and at various destinations. Several crew members are new to me and will become friends along the way.

The boat

See also tab “Boat” for more details. Snow Goose is a Moody 38CC, built in the UK in 1995. I have carefully selected her for long-distance bluewater sailing: solid construction, proven design, safe center cockpit and comfortable for extended passages. Size, weight and layout are like in a 40ft cruiser: 12x4m, 8 tonnes, 3 cabins, 2 heads. Snow Goose has undergone a substantial refit in 2024-2026 to prepare her for ocean crossings. Main upgrades include: new keel bolts, engine, radar, plotters, autopilot, main sail, code-zero, life raft, solar panels, lithium batteries, watermaker, tender+outboard, tv+hifi and stove+oven and rigging. We will have Starlink-Mini on board essentially for navigation and security purposes.

The voyage

See also tab “Voyage” for more details. The voyage is a 30,000+ nautical mile world journey. The journey is divided into six major regions. For each region I will take around three months. Crew changes are planned near international airports, making it easy to join or leave the boat.

The crew

See also tab “Crew” for the crew planning. This voyage is neither a cruise nor a race. It is about seamanship, curiosity, nature, cultures, people and the freedom of the sea.

For various legs of the voyage I am looking for crew members / joiners who would like to sail part of the journey – from short coastal legs to longer ocean passages. This may be interesting for: positive, flexible people; comfortable with shared space; willing to stand watch; a good attitude matters more than miles logged.

I offer a well-prepared bluewater yacht; an experienced, calm skipper; clear agreements; a non-commercial, cost-sharing arrangement; a unique and meaningful sailing experience.

There are three separate cabins, two doubles and one single.

Language: Communication on board will be in English. Personally, I also speak French, German and Dutch, currently learning Spanish.

Costs: This is not a charter. Crew members share onboard expenses: food, fuel, and occasional harbour fees. Travel to and from the boat, insurance, protective cothing (sailing suit + boots), and personal expenses are your own responsibility. Safety harnasses and lifelines are on board.

We normally cook meals on board. The 3-burner gas stove with oven allows us to make bread, tapas and pizzas and to serve hot meals. Our fishing gear may bring in the catch of the day. At anchor we can avoid expensive harbour fees, using the tender to go ashore and do shopping. We are a dry boat, so no alcohol is allowed while sailing. No smoking is allowed on board. Thus, life at sea is quite inexpensive. At anchor and on land we can do whatever we want.

How to apply: please contact me with a short introduction, your sailing experience, which leg(s) you are interested in and your availability.
